Data Storage

Page history last edited by Henry T. Hill 4 years, 6 months ago

DNA could store all of the world's data in one room

Lexar, as of January 2019, offered  the first 1TB SD card which can store 1 terabyte which experts think could store 3,334,000 books or 200,000 to 300,000 songs or 17,000 hours of music or 500 hours of movies. Amazon offers the Lexar 1TB SD card as of 9/28/2019 for $281.48.

Bit = a single binary digit - 0 or 1

Byte = 8 bits

Kilobyte (KB) = 1,024 bytes

Megabyte (MB) = 1,024 kilobytes

Gigabyte (GB) = 1,024 kilobytes

Terabyte (TB) = 1,024 gigabytes

Petabytes (PB) = 1,024 terabytes

Exabyte (EB) = 1,024 petabytes

Zettabyte (ZB) = 1,024 exabytes

Yottabyte (YB) = 1,024 zettabytes

A typical three minute song (MP3) takes about 3MB of space.  In 1983 the biggest hard drives stored 10MB of data or two and a half songs. In 1991 a 1-gigabyte hard drive could story 341 three minute songs. In 2019 a 1TB (terabyte) hard drive would store 342,000 three minute songs. We have not invented a home computer petabyte storage device, but if we had one, it would store 341 million three minute songs and a one exabyte storage device would store 341 billion three minute songs, and a one zettabyte storage device would store 34 trillion three minute songs.  See How Big is a Petabyte, Exabyte, Zettabyte or a Yottabyte
