Russian Invasion of Ukraine began February 24, 2022 at 5:00 am Ukraine time or 6:00 am  Moscow time (UTC+3) Putin announced that he had made the decision to launch a "special military operation" in eastern Ukraine

Put the Russian Ukraine conflict in perspective:

Ukraine vs Texas 

Ukraine: Population 44.13 million, size 233,062 square miles, dimensions 346 miles by 785 miles, GDP $155.6 billion

Texas: population 29.1 million, size 268,596 square miles, dimensions 801 miles by 773 miles, GDP $2.0 trillion. If Texas were a country, it would be the 10th largest economy of any country in the world, ahead of South Korea, Canada and just behind Brazil. 

Moldova: next door to the Russian enclave of Transnistria.  Moldova is not a member of NATO.

Moldavia: population 2,597,100, size 13,067 square miles (about half the size of West Virginia),  dimensions 56 miles and 214 miles, GDP $36,886 billion. Landlocked and borders Romania and Ukraine. 

Capital city: Chisinau also known as Kishinev (Russian) located in the center of the country on the river Bac, a tributary of the Dniester with a population of 532,513 (a third of the country's population).

Russia - total population 175.1 million, total deaths 2,840,000 to 3,394,369 with 1.6% to 1.9% of population

Germany - total population 64.9 million, total deaths 4,215,662 with 3.4% to 4.3% of population

 

World War II 

USSR - total population 1940 (before Hitler attacks in June 1941) 69,300,000,  total deaths 26,600,000 with 13.7% of population

Germany - total population 1939 (before invasion of Poland September 1, 1939) 69,300,000, total deaths 5,700,000 with 8.23 % of population
